    Education in Mississippi

Mississippi is a State on the Move in Education

Schools create a community’s future, and throughout Mississippi, our schools are among the biggest growers in educational achievement nationwide. “Mississippi is last in nothing today,” says Kati Haycock, Director of The Education Trust, Washington, DC.

Haycock says it is no accident student performance is going up. In 2001, the Mississippi Legislature enacted regulations to ensure success for all students in the state’s public schools. The Department of Education used this law as the basis for the creation of the Mississippi Plan for Student Achievement, a plan for increased accountability for all of Mississippi stakeholders.

“Schools can now look at how they are performing, and compete against their own record.” In fact, many of the schools on the Mississippi Coast are already rated at the top of the scale.
